The Department of Women’s & Gender Studies at the University of Oregon awards prizes to student through the following contests. Please note that deadline dates change each year and will be announced closer to the date of the application period and award period. Watch this page for updated dates, essay topics and other announcements.

All application materials must be submitted to 315 Hendricks Hall or submitted via email (wgs@uoregon.edu). Please use PDF format.

Abbie Jane Bakony Scholarship


This award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student in Women’s & Gender Studies. Candidates will be evaluated based on overall quality of their academic work, their commitment to learning, and their potential for further academic achievement.

The award is to honor the memory of Abbie Jane (White) Bakony, CIA agent, real estate broker and teacher, who came out as a lesbian at age 70. Read her story and see a photo here.

Award amount: $1200
Number of awards: 2
Disbursement: 3 equal payments (1 per term)
Deadline: Monday May 16, 2015, 4:00 pm
Award announcement: Commencement

Qualification:

  • be an undergraduate student majoring or minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies, planning to complete at least one year in the program
  • be currently enrolled and returning next academic year

Application requirements:

  • All entry materials must be typed.
  • Each application must include the following:
    • Cover page must include : “Bakony/Miller scholarship”; your full name, UO ID number, mailing address, email and phone number
    • A 750-1000 word essay: How has majoring in Women’s & Gender Studies influenced your intellectual development or how you act in the world?
    • Writing sample (separate from essay; can be a paper from a class, for example)
    • Copy of your unofficial transcript
    • Names of two faculty members to serve as recommenders/references
  • If submitting in hard copy, please include 3 copies of the total application. If submitting via PDF over email, only one copy is necessary.

Miller Family Scholarship


The Miller Family Scholarship supports an outstanding student in Women’s & Gender Studies, and may be awarded either to an undergraduate major or minor or a graduate certificate student. Candidates will be evaluated based on the overall quality of their academic work, their commitment to learning and their potential for further academic achievement.

Award amount: $750
Number of awards: 1
Disbursement: 3 equal payments (1 per term)
Deadline: Monday May 16, 2015, 4:00 pm
Award announcement: Commencement

Qualification:

  • be an undergraduate or graduate certificate student in Women’s and Gender Studies
  • be currently enrolled and returning next academic year

Application requirements:

The Bruce M. Abrams LGBTQ Essay Award


Students (one undergraduate, one graduate), from any discipline, are honored for their contribution to the advancement of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) studies.

Award amount: $500
Number of awards: up to 2
Disbursement: Once (Fall term)
Deadline: Monday May 16, 2015, 4:00 pm
Award announcement: Commencement

Qualification:

  • be currently enrolled and returning next academic year

Application requirements:

  • All entry materials must be typed.
  • Cover Page
  • Project submission:
    • Can be from any discipline
    • Contributes to the advancement of LGBTQ studies
    • For fine art pieces (music, dance, visual arts, theatre, creative writing, etc.) only: must be accompanied by an essay explaining the aims of the project and its importance to LGBTQ studies.
  • If submitting in hard copy, please include 2 copies of the total application. If submitting via PDF over email, only one copy is necessary.
